What to Do With Foreign Money

Send in retired currency. Leftover currency from a pre-euro trip to Europe can also be put to use. A private company called the Currency Commission (thecurrencycommission.com) will give you euros or U.S. or Canadian dollars for out-of-use European currency such as French francs or German marks.

The Web site lists accepted currencies, as well as exchange rates. The base euro rate for the expired banknotes was determined when each country set a conversion date to the euro, says spokesman David Brooks. After that rate is determined, the euros are converted to U.S. and Canadian dollars based upon the current exchange rates.
