"I found some old deutsch marks from a vacation that we took years ago . . . I thought that they would be worthless after Germany went to the euro. Less than one week after mailing them to TCC I had 150 euros for our vacation to France! Thanks TCC!" |

Left High and Dry
Departure Lounge: Susan Kurosawa
FIND of the week: Since 1999, when many members of the European Union adopted the euro, travellers have been stuck with unused French francs, deutschmarks and the like. The redemption period has long since passed and David Brooks of the Currency Commission estimates there is "the equivalent of billions of dollars of these non-legal tender banknotes in the desks, sock drawers and wallets of millions of travellers". The Currency Commission can change these expired banknotes into euros or Canadian or US dollars. The rate is less than the face value, but it beats a drawer full of drachma. www.thecurrencycommission.com.
