"I've had this 2000 franc note from Belgium sitting in my desk drawer for years. Even though it's only worth 80 euro or so . . . I'm glad to have the cash."

Cashing In Pre-euro Banknotes
Quick! Take out the cash from your wallet or purse and throw it in the garbage! Now, I double that anyone would listen to that request, but that is what many of you have essentially done over the years.

Remember that trip to Germany in 1998 or the vacation in Malta a few years ago? Well those deutsche marks and lira that you saved for the next vacation are now worthless...well not quite.

Starting in 1999 many countries belonging to the European Union adopted the euro. Financial institutions in these countries and around the world allowed the exchange of old domestic currency into euro, however this redemption period has long since passed. Now, for example, if you attempted to exchange your German deutsche marks in to euro or dollars, your bank would simply say "no".

This is where The Currency Commission comes in and says, "yes".

The Currency Commission’s mandate is to facilitate the redemption of old, expired banknotes. They currently redeem banknotes into euro, Canadian or US dollars through their website - www.thecurrencycommission.com.

Even after ten years of the euro there are still the equivalent of billions of dollars of these non-legal tender banknotes in the desks, sock drawers and wallets of millions of vacationers. Money that could be used for paying bills, a night out on the town or the next vacation was impossible due to the lack of any unified redemption mechanism.

The process is simple and takes less time than standing in queue at your bank. If you are not sure if your banknotes are acceptable, the Currency Commission lists almost two hundred banknotes along with images to help you verify your found money. After registering at The Currency Commission, simply enter the face value of the valid banknotes and mail in your redemption form along with the currency. In a week or so, your cheque will be hand!

So start looking in to the forgotten boxes of collectables from past vacations. Clean out that drawer you use to stash miscellaneous papers. You never know how much valuable garbage you may have lying around!
